VIIIs

Math:

All rising VIIIs received flashcards to practice automaticity in addition and subtraction. Below are printable versions, if you need them.

We encourage common board games such as Monopoly to give children practice with money, and games like Battleship and Set to support other skills such as using a coordinate grid and logical thinking.

We also recommend simple ways to incorporate math into everyday life; any chance you get to double or half a recipe, estimate or count totals, track the duration of time, or just skip count for fun are good ways to make math meaningful.

Reading:

Building on the Thinkmark and reading routine established at home this year, children should continue to explore “just right” fiction and nonfiction books over the summer. We want to encourage active reading by using strategies including asking questions, making predictions, connecting to characters, and visualizing the story. When your child finishes reading a fiction book, ask them to tell you about the characters, settings, problems, and resolutions. When your child finishes reading a nonfiction book, ask them to share three facts they learned. When children return to school in fall, they will be expected to sustain 20-30 minutes of independent reading in Library.
